Not to sound like the old guy yelling out the clouds, but it’s a shame that music videos pretty much don’t exist anymore. Sure, youtube is always there full of all videos young and old, but it’s not the same. I was sick last Thursday, and as is tradition I watched Price is Right from 11-12, but I was robbed of one of the more magical stay home sick from school perks…no music videos on MTV from 12-5 until TRL or Room Raiders came on.
Which is a shame. Music videos are a rare, all encompassing art form. They can be crazy, magical, nonsensical, life changing…you name it, there’s a music video that describes that expresses that feeling. Here’s a rapidly thrown together Top 5 music videos that truly took the combination of music and video to heart.
No. 5: Alien Ant Farm – Movies
Yeah that’s right, Alien Ant Farm. Had two songs. Movies, and a metal version of Michael Jackson’s Smooth Criminal. This video has everything that makes a music video great. Lazers, white people dancing, Oompa Loompa’s, the old dick in the popcorn move, Mr. Miyagi, Edward Scissorhands on the drums…I’m already second guessing not having this as my number 1 video.
No. 4 – Big Pimpin – Jay Z
I like my Jay Z in a bucket hat on a cruise with a bunch of biddies. If I could attend any party in the world it would have probably been the wrap up party on this video, because I imagine it was just doing the music video over again, only real life. There have been a plethera of rapping music videos that just show the rappers partying their asses off with 10s on 10s on 10s, but the crowning jewel is without a doubt Big Pimpin’.
No. 3 – Africa – Toto
Ahhh yes….there’s nothing quite like watching a bunch of white 70s porn stars lay down hot lyrics that include the words Kilimanjaro and Serengeti while peeping through the stacks of a very weirdly decorated library. The song is FIRE FLAMES though, and the video is laugh out loud funny. Could you imagine if this video hit the airwaves today? The PC police would have ripped Toto to shreds! I say screw the political correctness, this video was a dream turned realty.
No. 2 – Britney Spears – Toxic
I don’t what it is about this video, can’t quite put my finger on it, but it has a certain je ne sais quoi that is unparalleled.
No. 1 – Men at Work – Man Down Under
What makes this video stand out more than any other, is it’s a literal depiction of the lyrics of the song happening live. It’s hilariously awesome. It’s so bad it’s great. Men at Work, still getting shit done in 2016.
Honorable Mention: The White Stripes – Hardest Button to Button
