Via Yahoo: Agent Bart Hernandez was arrested Friday morning after a federal grand jury indicted him on human-trafficking charges related to the smuggling of Seattle Mariners outfielder Leonys Martin into the United States from Cuba, according to sources and documents obtained by Yahoo Sports. The sealed indictment, filed in a Florida federal court Feb. 12, alleges that Hernandez – who now works for Magnus Sports, the agency founded by singer Marc Anthony – conspired with smugglers to bring Martin into the United States in August 2010. He is expected to appear at the U.S. District Court in Miami at 2 p.m. on Friday. If convicted on conspiracy and financial-gain charges, Hernandez faces up to 20 years in prison, with a minimum sentence of three years.
This is a pretty strange story we got here. Just from reading the full Yahoo story and doing zero independent research I’m not really understanding what this Bart Hernandez cat did wrong. I mean yeah you probably shouldn’t be allowed to hold someone hostage while simultaneously negotiating a Major League contract for them. Seems like that probably gives you a bit of unfair leverage to hike up those agent fees. But to me the rest of it sounds exactly how I would assume smuggling someone out of Cuba would go. I mean the Cuban government doesn’t want these guys leaving to go to America so in order to get them out of there you are obviously going to have to do some shit that might not be 100% above board. Do people think that they just throw on a fake moustache like Bobby Valentine trying to sneak back into the Mets dugout and then board the next United Air flight back to Miami? If there’s one thing I know about human smuggling it’s that the “coyotes” make the rules and you follow them, if you don’t like it then go ahead and stay in Cuba. To me being a Cuban ex-pat and complaining about the method in which you fled the country seems a lot like wanting to have your cake and eat it too. When you get to America you get to have all the rights and privileges you can imagine. Nobody made any promises about how you get here.
